Coinbase and the Spanish tax agency: what the AEAT knows, when form 721 applies and how to declare

Coinbase is not a Spanish entity, so your balances may count towards form 721, and from 2026 your transactions reach the tax agency through DAC8. What is taxable, what is not and how to declare what you do on Coinbase.

Coinbase is one of the exchanges with the most users in Spain and, since Binance stopped operating here in July 2026, one of the usual destinations for people moving their crypto. For tax purposes it has one important feature: it is not a Spanish entity. That changes what information the tax agency receives and whether you have to file form 721.

In this guide we explain what the AEAT knows about your Coinbase activity, when form 721 applies and how to declare sales, swaps and rewards.

The short answer

  • Coinbase operates in the EU from Luxembourg. It obtained its MiCA licence from the Luxembourg regulator in June 2025 and uses it to serve the whole Union, Spain included.
  • Your balances may count towards form 721. As it is not an entity resident in Spain, the prudent approach is to treat what you hold on Coinbase as crypto held in custody abroad: if, together with your other foreign platforms, you exceed €50,000 at 31 December, file form 721.
  • From 2026, the tax agency receives your transactions through DAC8. Coinbase reports to its tax authority and the data is exchanged with Spain.
  • Selling or swapping is taxable; moving between your own accounts is not. Just as on any exchange.

What the tax agency knows about your Coinbase activity

Forms 172 and 173 are not filed by Coinbase

Forms 172 (balances) and 173 (transactions) are filed by crypto service providers resident in Spain or with a permanent establishment here. Coinbase serves Spain from another EU country, so, in principle, your data does not reach the tax agency that way, unlike what happened with Binance's Spanish subsidiary.

DAC8 does affect you

Since 1 January 2026 the DAC8 directive applies. It requires crypto-asset service providers serving EU residents to report their transactions to their tax authority, which shares them with each customer's country of residence. In practice, what you do on Coinbase in 2026 will reach the AEAT in 2027.

For earlier years, the fact that the tax agency does not receive an automatic list does not mean it cannot ask for one. If your figures do not match your bank movements or what you declared, it can request the details.

Do I need to file form 721 for Coinbase?

Form 721 is an information return: filing it costs nothing, but failing to file it when required does have consequences. You must file it between January and March if, at 31 December, the value of your crypto held by foreign custodians exceeds €50,000.

With Coinbase, keep three things in mind:

  • Add up all your foreign platforms. The threshold is combined: Coinbase, Kraken, Bitpanda or any other non-resident custodian count together.
  • Look at the value at 31 December, not what you invested. A portfolio that has gone up can exceed the threshold even if you put in much less.
  • Coinbase Wallet is not Coinbase. The self-custody app, where you control the keys, is not a custodian. According to Spain's Directorate General for Taxation, what you hold in self-custody is not declared on form 721.

Some advisers argue that Coinbase does not count towards form 721 because it was registered with the Bank of Spain. That is not the safest view: form 721 looks at where whoever holds your keys is resident, and Coinbase is not resident in Spain. If you exceed the threshold, the prudent thing is to file it.

What is taxable on Coinbase

Transaction on CoinbaseTaxable?How
Buying crypto with eurosNoIt sets your acquisition cost
Selling crypto for eurosYesCapital gain or loss
Swapping one crypto for anotherYesIt is a swap, even without touching euros
Staking rewardsYesIncome from movable capital
Rewards for holding USDCYesIncome from movable capital
Paying with the Coinbase CardYesEvery payment is a sale of crypto
Sending to your wallet or another exchange of yoursNoTransfer between your own accounts

The card is what surprises people most: every coffee paid with crypto is a sale, with its own small gain or loss. With many payments a month, the calculation gets complicated quickly.

How to declare what you did on Coinbase

Download your statements

From the Coinbase website you can download your transaction history as a CSV and your gains reports. Download them all, including rewards and sends and receives.

Do not rely on the Coinbase report alone

The Coinbase report only sees what happens inside Coinbase. If you brought crypto in from Binance, from your wallet or from another exchange, Coinbase does not know what you paid for it and may treat it as if it had no cost, inflating your gains when you sell. The Spanish tax agency applies FIFO across all your purchases, not just those on one platform.

Match incoming transfers with their origin

Every deposit that arrives at Coinbase from another account of yours must be matched with its withdrawal at the origin, with its date and cost. This is the step that prevents the most mistakes, especially if you are moving your crypto out of Binance.

Put it on your tax return

Gains and losses from sales and swaps go to the savings income base, in the virtual currency section. Staking and USDC rewards are declared as income from movable capital. You will find it explained step by step on our page on how to declare crypto in Spain.

What if I did not declare it properly?

If you have tax years with undeclared Coinbase activity, or a form 721 you did not file, you can still correct it yourself before a request arrives. Regularising is far cheaper than waiting for the tax agency to ask, and with DAC8 under way that moment is getting closer.

Frequently asked questions

Does Coinbase report to the Spanish tax agency?

From 2026, yes: under DAC8, Coinbase reports your transactions to its tax authority, which sends them to the AEAT. For earlier years it did not file the Spanish forms 172 and 173, but the tax agency can ask you for the information if your figures do not add up.

Is the Coinbase tax report good enough for my return?

It is a starting point, but it is not enough if you have used other platforms or brought crypto in from elsewhere: Coinbase does not know its acquisition cost. The figure you declare must come from all your transactions using FIFO.

Does what I hold in Coinbase Wallet go on form 721?

No. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet: the keys are yours and there is no foreign custodian. What does go on form 721, if you exceed the threshold, is what you hold on the Coinbase exchange.

If you would rather we handled it

We reconcile your Coinbase history with the rest of your platforms and wallets, match every transfer with its origin, calculate your gains with FIFO and prepare your form 721 if it applies. See our pricing or tell us about your case on our crypto tax report page.

Does this sound like your case?

If the above matches your situation, see how we handle it before deciding anything. Or tell us about it directly, if you prefer.
