What is taxable when you declare cryptocurrency, and it is not just selling

The four operations people overlook most. None of them requires you to have cashed out to your bank.

Selling for euros

The obvious case: a capital gain or loss for the difference between the transfer value and the acquisition value.

Swapping one token for another

It is an exchange and it generates a capital gain or loss even if you never go through euros. It is the one most often forgotten.

Earning from staking or lending

Rewards for lending out your crypto-assets are income, not gains, and they are taxed when you receive them, not when you sell them.

Receiving without buying

Airdrops, forks and protocol rewards. Their value on the date received becomes your acquisition cost when you sell them.

The misconception that costs the most

Almost everyone arrives with one of these ideas. All of them cause problems later.

  • What people think

“As long as I don’t convert to euros, it isn’t taxed”

    How it works

Token-to-token swaps are taxed the same, without going through euros

  • What people think

“I’m at a loss, so I don’t have to declare anything”

    How it works

Losses must be declared too: it is the only way to offset them later

  • What people think

“Nobody can see what is in my private wallet”

    How it works

The blockchain is public and platforms report to the authorities

  • What people think

“If the exchange doesn’t give me a tax report, there’s nothing to declare”

    How it works

The obligation to declare is yours, whether or not the exchange gives you a report

How to declare cryptocurrency on the 2026 income tax return

The return filed in 2026 covers the 2025 tax year. Gains and losses from selling or swapping crypto-assets go in the specific virtual currency section within capital gains and losses, operation by operation or grouped by asset, with their acquisition and transfer values.

That result is added to the savings tax base, which has its own scale. Staking rewards and lending interest follow a different path: they are investment income, also in the savings base, but with different offsetting rules.

Acquisition cost is calculated using FIFO: the first units you bought are deemed the first sold. That is why the history of the year you are declaring is not enough. Without earlier purchases, the cost comes out incomplete and the gain inflated.

  • Up to €6,000: 19%
  • €6,000 to €50,000: 21%
  • €50,000 to €200,000: 23%
  • €200,000 to €300,000: 27%
  • Over €300,000: 30%

How much will you pay on your gain?

Gains on your crypto are taxed in the savings base, by bands. Enter your net gain and see how it is split.

Declaring staking, airdrops and DeFi to the Spanish Tax Agency

What is not a purchase or sale is declared too, and each type of activity has its own treatment.

  • Staking: rewards are taxed when received, at their value on that date. That value becomes their acquisition cost, so when you sell them you are only taxed on the later difference.
  • Airdrops: the value is fixed on the date received, which will be your cost when you sell. And genuine airdrops are separated from spam tokens you never asked for.
  • Lending: interest earned is income. Collateral liquidations have their own effects and should be reviewed one by one.
  • Liquidity pools and yield farming: entry, exit and the token representing your position are the delicate part. Where there is no clear administrative criterion, a reasonable one is applied, documented and kept consistent across all years.
  • Tokens without a deep market: they are taxed anyway. What matters is the price source, because it is the first thing questioned in a review.

Declaring losses so you can offset them

A declared loss is offset against gains over the following four tax years, including gains on shares or funds. An undeclared loss does not exist. Sample data.

Calendar for declaring cryptocurrency

The Spanish Tax Agency publishes the exact dates every year. This is the rhythm, and rebuilding your activity takes weeks, not days.

  1. January–March

    Form 721

If on 31 December you held more than €50,000 in crypto custodied abroad, it is reported before the income tax return. We explain it on the Form 721 page.

  2. February–March

    Gather and reconcile

This is the time to export histories and rebuild your activity. Starting here is what lets you file without rushing.

  3. April

    The income tax campaign opens

You can file from day one with your crypto figures already closed, instead of correcting the draft on the fly.

  4. End of June

    Voluntary deadline ends

Direct debit of the payment closes a few days earlier. After that, the return carries a surcharge.

  5. Afterwards

    Late filing

Filing late without a prior request from the Tax Agency carries surcharges that grow with the delay. It is still better than waiting for the Tax Agency to ask.

How we do it

  1. We gather and reconcile your activity from the start

Exchanges, wallets and protocols from your first purchase, not just the year you are declaring. We match every transfer between your own accounts so it does not count as a sale.

  2. We classify operation by operation

What is a sale, what is a swap, what is income and what is a zero-cost acquisition. Anything that does not fit a rule is reviewed by hand.

  3. We calculate with FIFO and apply offsets

On the already reconciled portfolio, with pending losses from previous years and the rest of your assets, because the offsetting rules link them.

  4. We explain the options before closing

When the rules allow more than one correct way to declare something, we show you the effect of each and you decide with the information in front of you.

  5. We hand you the figures and their backing

What goes in each section of the return, the report with per-operation detail and the criteria memo that justifies it.

What we need from you

  • Exports from your exchanges from your first operation: CSV or read-only API keys. Never private keys.
  • Public addresses of your wallets, including ones you no longer use.
  • Which DeFi protocols you have used, even roughly.
  • Your previous returns, especially if you had losses pending offset.
  • Bank statements showing money in and out in euros.
  • If you hold shares or funds, those too: they go on the same return and offset each other.

How much it costs to declare cryptocurrency

The price is set by how many data sources need reconciling, not by how much you have earned. You know it before we start.

  • Single platform

    €250

    VAT included

All your activity is on one centralised exchange: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bit2Me…

  • Multi-exchange

    €350

    VAT included

You trade on two or three centralised exchanges and move funds between them. Every transfer is matched so it doesn’t count as a sale.

  • Mixed portfolio

    €450

    VAT included

You combine exchanges with self-custody wallets, DeFi, NFTs or stocks, up to three data sources in total.

  • Complex portfolio

    from€700

    VAT included

More than three sources, thousands of transactions, several networks, chained DeFi protocols or incomplete histories that need rebuilding.

If you have losses from previous years or shares on the same return, tell us in the assessment and we will take it into account when confirming the tier.

Included in every tier

  • Reconciliation of all your sources: buys, sells, swaps, transfers and fees
  • Gains and losses calculated with FIFO, the method the AEAT applies
  • A report with the transaction-by-transaction detail behind every figure
  • A criteria memo: what was decided on each grey area and why
  • Figures ready to carry over to your tax return

What counts as a data source

Each exchange, each self-custody wallet, each DeFi protocol and each broker is one source. Three exchanges are three sources; so are one exchange, one MetaMask and one stock broker.

Frequently asked questions

I have only bought and never sold. Do I have to declare my cryptocurrency?
Buying and holding does not create a gain or loss. But it is worth checking whether there were token swaps you did not recognise as such, staking rewards or airdrops, or whether you exceed €50,000 on foreign platforms, which requires filing Form 721.
I lost money. Why should I declare?
To be able to offset that loss against gains this year and in the following four, including gains on shares or funds. If you do not declare it, it does not exist for offsetting purposes.
Am I taxed on staking even if I have not sold the rewards?
Yes. Rewards are taxed when received, at their value on that date. In return, that value becomes your acquisition cost and when you sell you are only taxed on the difference.
I hold crypto on foreign exchanges. Does anything change?
Gains are declared the same way on the income tax return. What is added is a reporting obligation: if the balance on foreign platforms exceeds €50,000 on 31 December, Form 721 must be filed between January and March. It is explained on the Form 721 page.
I have been trading for years and never declared. Do I declare just this year?
It is worth looking at before you file, because declaring this year properly makes the earlier years visible. There is an orderly way out: we explain it on the page about regularising cryptocurrency.
How much does it cost to declare cryptocurrency?
It depends on how many data sources need reconciling. Single platform, with all your activity on one exchange: €250. Multi-exchange, two or three exchanges: €350. Mixed portfolio, with your own wallets, DeFi, NFTs or shares up to three sources: €450. Complex portfolio: from €700. All prices include VAT. We confirm the tier before starting; the detail is on the pricing page.
